The layout of the website is really complicated and confusing. Most of the information that I have found has been in the stories which the website provides. You also have to think about each question carefully and under which category the question would go in.
Thanks for your comments, Reem! Does anyone have any "cheats" to help your classmates find answers more quickly? Also, remember the three parts of your review: 1. Summary of site layout (this means a quick overview of how website is organized) 2. Description of 3 artifacts 3. Description of your favorite activity (can be any part of Ancient China website)
The British Museum trip was fantastic once I was able to get around the site. I liked the animation part and the pictures were very clear and helpful to understand what the Chinese people did in the old days.
I mostly enjoyed the Tombs and Ancestors part because I didn't realize how much the ancient dead ancestors could talk to them and make the living relatives' lives either good or bad.

In Ancient China gods were told to have great "powers". They believed that there were many gods and they had a great deal of power over their lives. If there were many floods and the people would have to starve over the winter, they would pray to the Gods for better fortune. When the Chinese pray, they hold a ritual.
While surfing the site, www.ancientchina.co.uk, I found that the Chinese Exhibit was not made to give organized answers a logical order. This site, though full of valuable information, was not created with the intention of people finding specific information. (To be continued)
-when first entering the site the exhibit includes 5 sections to look through and learn information. These sections include Crafts and Artisans, Geography, Tombs and ancestors, and writing. -Molly Smith
Artifacts include drums which are put into the ceremonial chamber to use like gongs on the battlefield in southwestern china. The tombs of important lords were different from the ones of people that were killed and buried with him. The lord’s coffin was covered with lacquer an object covered with the sap from a lacquer tree. The coffins contained the bodies covered with jade which symbolized how wealthy and powerful the lord was. Jade was thought to provide protection from bad spirits and to preserve the body in the tomb. -Molly Smith
The exhibit is arranged into crafts and artisans, geography, time, tombs and ancestors, and writing. Important materials in China included jade, bronze, and ceramics. Time contains a list of dynasties. Three artifacts which can be found in the British museum are a jade bi, a dagger handle found in a tomb, and a cong from the neolithic period. My favorite activity was the story about how Nu Gua made people out of clay.
the website was difficult to understand at first but you get used to it. All in all the website was pretty helpful. It had a lot useful information about china. The one thing I couldn't find though was what's a philologist.
My favorite part of the activity was looking at the cartoons about Nu Gua. I thought that the Chinese ancient stories were very creative and unique. Especially about how mankind was made, and about their wealth stature.
This exhibit was poorly designed and hard to follow.in order to find the details about the tings you want you need to try a few different pages because the different sections of the exhibit are badly categorized. although the exhibit is poorly designed it still has a beautiful collection of artifacts from ancient china. one of the artifacts i liked was the Tripod pot partly because it had a diagram before describing how they made it and i had a strange design. another artifact i liked was a wine vessel because it looked nothing like what we used today and it had a ton of detail. another artifact i saw was the Ceramic Bowl because it had a ton of detail that they stamped in with some kind of stamp so it had a beautiful pattern and i was interested by it because it looked so big and it did not look very practical. my favorite exhibit is the Crafts and Artisans because it shows all different kinds of pottery and i found the very interesting to0 look at and read about how it was made.
The layout of the exhibit was very confusing. It was hard to find the answers. one of the artifacts were the bowl with inlaid glass. The bowl comes from the eastern Zhou period. Another artifact is the wine vessel. It is a copy of the bronze vessel. the last artifact is the tripod pot. The shape is not as regular as one that would be made using the potter's wheel. Our favorite activity was the geography section
The ram"s head was made of bronze and was found on the front of a ritual vessel,it's very detailed. The golden dagger handle is wicked detailed with many different characteristics. The jade bi is a circular disc that has Chinese characters written on it and this bi in particular is from the Shang dynasty in the 18th century. My favorite activities were the exploring activities.
MS. SHOCK...Some cheats are looking in the explore section and the challenge section and clicking on linked words (works that have an underline or a different color).
All of these artifacts were contained in the Ancient Chinese tomb which was my favorite activity to explore on the site. It contained many artifacts and information on what was needed and contained in the tomb for the afterlife. It takes you through each and every part and lets you see every detail that is included in certain artifacts. The site is very well set up and has many fun and exciting activities but, it was difficult to find certain information because there were so many things to look through within the sections. With out even going to the British museum I can see from the website that it contains great information and artifacts and would be an interesting place to visit. - Molly Smith
3 Artifacts One artifact that i found was the bi. The bi was made out of jade. It was a circular disk with a round hole in the middle. It was believed to protect ones spirit in the afterlife from evil spirits. Another artifact that I found was a bowl with inlaid glass. The bowl was made in the Eastern Zhou period. The designs on the bowl was made with lacquer. Lastly the last artifact that I found was a depiction of the ancient Chinese tombs. Much like the Egyptians the Chinese would have tombs with multiple rooms that served different purposes. One Chinese tomb had a weapons room, a room which honors the ancestors of the deceased, and two rooms to bury the lord of the house himself with his attendants, and one for his servants.
The layout of the British Museum was a little confusing at first and it took a while to get used to. After I understood how to use it I knew how to get to different places on the exhibit. On this website there were 5 main topics and under each topic there was information about it. this exhibit contain many artifact such as Jade bi from Shang Dynasty. The inscription is from the 18th century A.D. Another artifact is Ram's head on bronze ritual vessel. There was also a Cong from Neolithic period. My favorite activity was seeing everything that the Ancient Chinese made with bronze and jade.
On the British Museum website, the layout of the exhibit was broken up into five sections that have additional information more specific about each section. The sections were Crafts and Artisans, Geography, Time, Tombs and Ancestors, and Writing. Then underneath these sections there are three more, they are story, explore and challenge. This layout made it easy to find the category that had to do with each question. In the exhibit there are many artifacts such as, the Jade bi from the Shang dynasty. The writing on it is from the 18th century A.D. Another artifacts from this exhibit is a dagger handle that was found in a tomb. One last artifact found in the exhibit is, Cong from Neolithic period that was used to tell time. My favorite activity from this exhibit was how the ancient Chinese believed that their ancestors can influence good or bad luck.
At first the exhibit is a little complicated to find information, but as you start to search around the information gets more familiar. There are five categories where the information is. Under those five categories is information about Ancient China. One artifact that can be found in the exhibit is the dagger which is a handle found in a tube. A second artifact that can be found in the exhibit is the Ram's head. A third artifact that can be found in the exhibit is the Bi, from the 18th century of the Shang dynasty. My favorite activity was the story about the jade.
There are three different sections to choose from in the tomb and ancestor section: Story, Explore, and Challenge. In the story section they teach you how to please ancestors. In the explore section it teaches you how the average kings tomb looked like. In the challenge section you have to find the right combination of objects for a tomb.
All of the following objects are placed in kings tombs:
Halberd: It is a cross between an axe and a spear. It was tied on or attached to a long stick or rod to be used in battle.
Bell: Chinese bells are unlike Western bells as they do not have a clapper inside. Instead they are struck on the flat panel between the sets of round knobs, or else at the lip of the bell. The shape of the bell means that when it is struck two notes sound together.
Hu: They were used at rituals for holding wine. This large hu is typical of the ones that started to appear from the Western Zhou period onward. They were used in pairs.
the exhibit was arranged into five different categories, time, crafts and artisans, writing, tombs and geography. There was a cong from the neolithic time period. A jade bi from the shang dynasty and a Ram's head made of bronze.
the website was difficult to understand at first but you get used to it. All in all the website was pretty helpful. It had a lot useful information about china. The one thing I couldn't find though was what's a philologist. Three artifacts would be a bi which was made of jade and buried with the dead. The next artifact would be the chinese kiln which allowed the chinese to heat objects to extreme tempetarture
I already told you about the ancestors. Now I would like to tell you about the Jade that is found in Ancient China. Jade is made from Nephrite which is a very tough and hard material. It comes up from the ground, then washed over by water, then it is found. Jade has been found in the tombs of Kings because they felt they had to take something important with them in the afterlife. Jade was made mostly into jewelery. A hole was made into it by artists and people put a sting through it and wore it around their necks.
Another artifacts that I found interesting was the story of how humans were made. She used the clay from Yellow River and formed them into the likeness of the Gods. The people she made from hand became rich, but she got tired and made people using her cane, but these people became poor and unlucky.
I did like this tour of Ancient China and if I had more time, I would like to read through this site again.
This website is cool and very interesting but very confusing. I really liked the weapons chamber. And the Ancient Chinese tomb. There was a lot of cool stuff in there.
The layout of this exhibit has a map of china in the background and different categories of china’s history. The chinese made bronze ritual vessels in the shape of sacred animals. There was a dagger handle found in a tomb made of gold. It is very detailed with inscriptions and designs. Im guessing they used something called a cong to measure time periods. My favorite activity is the dark murky egg because it is very interesting to look at and seems almost hypnotizing.............MAURICE AMBILA
The exhibit was interesting. One of the things there was a bronze lamb; Bronze was made from smelting tin and copper, with occasional lead. Most of the exhibit is filled with Chinese art and gems, like bronze and jades, and things used for burying people.
One of the artifacts there are the Bi’s, which are disks made with jade and a whole in the center, Along with a spiritual vessel in the shape of a bronze ram’s head. And aswell as a golden tipped dagger found in a tomb.
